Assam has received the Best Emerging State, 2012 award in the Safari India National Tourism Awards, an official release stated.


In a function held on August 18 last at Hotel Ashoka, Chanakyapuri, New Delhi, Director of Tourism, Assam Baldev Malakar received the award from Madan Prasad Bezbaruah, permanent representative of United Nations World Tour Organization, who chaired the PATWA International Seminar on climate change and sustainable tourism and Safari India National Tourism Awards organized by Pacific Area Travel Writers Association (PATWA). The seminar and the award ceremony were attended by representatives from various national and international tourism organizations.

Every year, Safari India, a premier tourism magazine covering entire region of India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Pakistan and South East Asia gives away national tourism awards to recognize individuals, hotels, airlines and destinations. The magazine covers a wide range of topics on tourism, aviation, travel agents, hotels, travel trade conferences, wildlife and environment.

PATWA is the leading travel writers’ organization representing members from across the world. The aim of the organization is to promote professional development of travel writing communications, which will make valuable contribution in the promotion of tourism. It aims to support the fundamental objectives and efforts for tourism and at the same time try to maintain adherence to the fundamental principles of the UNESCO, United Nations and WTO.

Assam is consistently trying to make a place in the world tourism market. With this objective, it is taking some significant steps including participation in the domestic and international fairs and festivals along with the leading tour operators of the State. Assam successfully participated as the ThemeState in the Surajkund Craft Mela, 2012 and showcased its rich culture, art and crafts. Assam also participated in the International Tourism Bourse (ITB) Berlin, 2012 the International Mega Tourism event.

Assam has already developed the mega circuits covering almost all the major tourist destinations in the state. With tremendous potentiality of river tourism, Assam Tourism has already introduced the luxury river cruise MV Mahabahu and steps are being taken to further develop river tourism in the State, stated in the release.
