Jorhat Engineering College (popularly known as JEC among its students and alumni) situated at Jorhat town of Assam is a premier engineering college of the North East India and the second Government Engineering College of Assam. Established in 1960 by the Government of Assam, Jorhat Engineering College has observed its Golden Jubilee celebration in the year 2011.

The College came into existence on 7th January, 1959 at H.R.H.P.O.W. Institute of Engineering & Technology, Jorhat with the then Principal of the Institute, Sri H.N. Barua also as the Principal in-charge of Jorhat Engineering College. The College started functioning with admission of its first batch of students in Civil Engineering, on 10th October, 1960.

The college has five four-year undergraduate programs which are accredited by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) in civil engineering, computer science and engineering, electrical engineering, and Instrumentation and mechanical engineering. It is worthy to be noted that established in 1987, the college was the first in north-east to offer BE degree in Computer Science & Engineering. The college also has one three-year postgraduate program in computer application leading to a Master of Computer Applications (M.C.A.).

Jorhat Engineering College has a very dedicated Training and Placement cell, headed by Mr. Plabon Kakoti. The average Placement percentage is over 65%, where recruiting agencies include various public sector undertakings, software companies and reputed private organizations.


Jorhat Engineering College is a fully residential college having its campus spread over a land area of over 200 acres. It has nine student hostels including one girl’s hostel, with a total capacity of approximately 900. About 80% of the staff, both teaching and non-teaching, live on the campus. Jorhat Engineering College has a hospital with a resident doctor, a co-operative store, one Primary school, a number of playgrounds and an auditorium. The campus is at the distance of four kilometers from the heart of the city. It is well-connected by the college bus services, and private transport services.

The Annual techno-cultural fest of Jorhat Engineering College, which is known as Phoenix includes various events. These events range from workshops, exhibitions, Quiz, Fashion show, Rock competition and many more.
