Major General Konsam Himalaya Singh of Manipur became the first person from Manipur in fact from North-East to become a Lieutenant General of Indian Army. He was also the first army officer from Manipur and North East to get the rank of Major General in 2011.
Lieutenant General Singh originally from Charangpat village in Thoubal district of Manipur is a graduate of Defence Services Staff College Wellington, and National Defence College, New Delhi.
Himalay Singh has held varied Commands, Staff and Instructional appointments during his career so far. He has vast operational experience in Counter Insurgency (CI) Operations in Jammu and Kashmir (J& K) where he served five tenures in the last 35 years and four tenures in North East.
During the Kargil War, when he held the rank of Colonel, he commanded the 27th Battalion, The Rajput Regiment in action, for which he was awarded the Yudh Seva Medal. Singh is a skydiver and mountaineer, also participated in the Kanchenjunga expedition in 1987.
