Ace Manipuri boxer M C Mary Kom today became the first Indian woman boxer to clinch a gold medal at the Asian Games after she came from behind to beat Kazakhstan’s Zhaina Shekerbekova in the flyweight (51KG) title clash.
The Manipuri mother-of-three, ‘Magnificent Mary’, also a five-time world champion and Olympic bronze-medallist, defeated Shekerbekova 2-0 in an evenly-contested battle in which the Kazakh had smoothly outwit the Indian in the opening two minutes. But Mary Kom checked herself and stunned Shekerbekova with her power packed punches in the second and third round.
