Assamese Hindustani classical singer of the Patiala Gharana, Begum Parveen Sultana has been awarded this year’s prestigious Padma Bhushan award. Born at Daccapatty in Nagaon city of Assam she was earlier awarded with Padma Shri (1976) and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award (1999) too. Incidentally, She was conferred the Padmashri at the age of only 25.


Sultana has sung for movies such as GadarKudratDo Boond Pani,and Pakeezah. Recently, she sang the theme song of Vikram Bhatt’s 1920.She also sang the popular number Humein Tumse Pyaar Kitna for the film Kudrat in 1981.

Noted actor-director Kamala Haasan too have been selected for the prestigious Padma Bhushan award this year, while Bollywood actors Vidya Balan and Paresh Rawal will receive Padma Shri.
