A great achievement for entire Assamese People and Society! Finally the works of the great Vaishnavite saint of Assam of 15th century Srimanta Sankardeva will reach out to a global audience. On Sunday, the book, Great Songs – English rendering of Srimanta Sankardeva’s Borgeets, a translation of the Saint’s songs from Assamese to English by Sanjib Kumar Borkakoti was released on Sunday at the Guwahati Press Club jointly by Kishori Mohan Pathak, former vice-chancellor of Tezpur University, Bipul Mahanta, vice-president of Assam Satra Mahasabha, Sattradhikar of Nagaon’s Battadrawa Satra Debananda Debo Goswami, Nagaon MLA Dr Durlav Chamua and Thaneswas Malakar, DC Udalguri.

“There is altogether 35 Borgeets in the book, along with the original version. Earlier, Banikanta Kakoti had made a similar effort, but this is the first time a full volume of the Borgeets will be brought out. I am happy to do that and I feel it will help spread the message of the great social reformer in faraway places,” said by Sanjib Kumar Borkakoti, who is also the president of the society.

The book was published by the Society for Sankardeva. Borgeets are devotional hymns composed by Srimanta Sankardeva to preach the tenets of Vaishnavism and to spread his message of harmony and brotherhood. Srimanta Sankardeva had created a new classical school of music with his Borgeets. The Borgeets or Great songs are one of the principal modes of conveying the principles of the Ek Sharan Bhagawati Dharma, the Vaishnavite order founded by the saint.
